Tarot, Palm or Astrology: Which Fits Your Event?

Tarot, palm reading and astrology compared for parties: pace, price evidence, the events each suits and whether one reader can offer two.

T

Tarot, palm reading and astrology all work as party entertainment, and most hosts only need one. The right pick depends on how many guests you have, whether they are standing or seated, and what you want guests to talk about afterwards. All three are entertainment, and every reader on EventTarot who offers palm reading or astrology also reads tarot, so you are rarely choosing between readers, only between formats.

The short answer

  • Large or mixed crowd, you want the safe choice: tarot. It is the best documented format at events, with the clearest pace and price evidence.
  • Busy room where speed matters: palm reading, which GigSalad describes as quicker than tarot. Confirm the pace with the reader.
  • Small group, seated, birthday or girls' night: astrology, because every guest has a sign to compare. Ask the reader for a short sun-sign version.

Tarot: the default for a reason

Tarot is the format with the most evidence behind it. At party pace one reader sees about 4 to 6 guests an hour, with readings of 10 to 15 minutes each, and a typical two-hour booking is $250 to $700 in US dollars. Marketplaces file it under its own category, so there are plenty of readers to compare. The cards on the table also photograph well, which matters at a wedding or a bachelorette.

Palm reading: fast and personal

A palm reader looks at the guest's hand and talks through the lines. GigSalad's category text says palm reading is quicker than tarot and can take more guests, and The Bash gives palm readers their own city pages. We found no number of minutes per palm reading, so treat the speed as a reason to ask, not a promise. The Bash shows US palm reader listings at roughly $75 to $200 an hour, or $125 to $600 per event.

It works well at Halloween parties, birthdays, corporate events and festivals. Read more in what a palm reading at a party is like, or browse palm readers.

Astrology: a conversation about signs

An astrology reader talks through each guest's sun sign and sometimes their birth chart. The format changes with the input. A sun-sign reading needs only a birth date. A birth chart also needs the time and place of birth, and chart readings are longer, so for a party ask the reader for a short version. We found no party-specific source for reading length or guests per hour.

On price, The Bash's Massachusetts astrologer page lists $100 to $250 an hour, or $250 to $500 per event, across 13 listings, and says planners book about 45 days ahead. That page mixes astrologers with other entertainers, so use it as a rough guide. Astrology suits birthdays, bachelorette parties and girls' nights, where guests enjoy comparing signs. Oracle cards, numerology and tea leaves

Three other formats appear less often. Oracle cards work like tarot with a different deck, and marketplaces list them inside their tarot categories. Numerology works from a guest's name and birth date; one Toronto act gives guests written notes to keep. Tea-leaf reading takes longer per guest because the guest drinks a cup first. Scarlett Entertainment, a UK agency, lists tea-leaf readings as one-to-one, and the format suits seated, slower parties such as tea parties and showers. All of them are on party readings beyond tarot.

Pick by the kind of event

  • Standing reception or festival: tarot or palm reading, with a second reader above about 40 guests.
  • Seated dinner or small group: astrology, oracle cards or tea leaves, since guests have time for a longer chat.
  • Themed night: match the theme. A tea party suits tea leaves; a costume night suits a fortune teller of any kind.
  • Mixed ages and tastes: tarot, the most widely listed format.

This guide to the fit is our reading of the listings, not a measured result. Agencies agree on one point: book more than one reader for a big event.

Can one reader do two formats?

Often, yes. Marketplace listings bundle methods: a Pennsylvania group offers tarot, palmistry, numerology and crystal ball readings together, a Montreal provider offers tarot and palmistry, and a Virginia reader offers tarot and astrology at $150 an hour. This is a sample, not a measured share. On EventTarot, every reader who lists palm reading, astrology or another type also reads tarot, so you can ask one reader to offer two formats at the same event.

What all of them have in common

  • Setup: a table, two chairs and good light.
  • Price band: mostly $100 to $200 an hour or $250 to $500 per event in the US, often with a two-hour minimum.
  • Entertainment only: no prediction about health, money, legal matters or love should be taken as fact.
  • Local rules: some cities license fortune telling. Ask your venue or check your city code.

FAQ

Which is better for a party: tarot, palm reading or astrology?

Tarot is the most documented and the safest default. Palm reading is described as quicker, so it can suit a busy room. Astrology suits small groups who like comparing signs. Ask each reader about their pace before you book.

Is palm reading cheaper than tarot?

The ranges overlap. The Bash shows palm readers at roughly $75 to $200 an hour in the US, and tarot readers commonly charge $100 to $400 an hour. Individual reader rates matter more than the format.

How many guests can one reader see?

For tarot at party pace, about 4 to 6 guests an hour. We have no measured figure for the other formats, so ask the reader.

Can I book two formats at one event?

Often one reader offers both. Every reader listed for palm reading, astrology, oracle cards, numerology or tea-leaf reading on EventTarot also reads tarot.

Are these readings predictions?

No. They are entertainment and conversation starters. Do not use any reading for health, money or legal decisions.

How far ahead should I book?

Four to eight weeks ahead for normal weekends. October dates, December holiday parties and New Year's Eve book out earliest, often two to three months ahead.
